The Mazda 323 is an awesome little subcompact car. The 323 was produced by Mazda from 1976 until 2003. 323's were built in Hiroshima Japan as well as Taiwan, Malaysia, South Africa, Colombia, and New Zealand. The 323 was originally known as the GLC and you can still find a few of those around. The GLC was then named the 323 and then in 1990 it was renamed again as th
Protege. The Mazda 323 or
Protege was also sold in South Africa where it was known as the Etude.
The Mazda 323 always received great ratings for it's easy handling; it was often featured in car magazines. The 323 was more expensive than its competitors such as the Honda Civic because of where the 323 was manufactured. The 323 is noted as being the first Japanese car to make the jump to the all important compact category in 1990 when the four door version was named the Protege. The Protege opened the doors to similar cars such as the Mercury Tracer and the Ford Escort.
In 2004, 323 was replaced by the Mazda3, which is similar to the Volvo S40 and Ford Focus. The Mazda3 comes in a cute 4-door sedan and sporty 5-door hatchback. The Mazda3 sports a 2.0 litre engine on the 3i sedan and a hefty 2.3 litre engine on the Mazda3 sedan and hatchback. The Mazda 323 has undergone a lot of changes, but despite the name changes the 323, Protégé, or Mazda3 is better than ever. This car has serious staying power.
