118 is fast enough for the US. Indeed when I was driving my car there, I never approached this limit and was not even aware it exists. Generally, if you go above 100 MPH in the States, you lose your license. Well, I (and my car) are now in Europe. So for example when I travel to Germany, believe me that 118 MPH on an Autobahn is oftentimes a drag. I guess the worse is the psychological thing that in case you sometimes need more, you are stuck at 118 MPH.

i reached 121 on my car a while back but even 100 is more than enough....loosing your license, your car, and possibly dying at that speed....just isn''t worth it.... a long with all the other people that your risking on a public road. I thought about the governer thing too but why?...no reason to.

I did not intend to be discussing philosophical reasoning beyond removing the governor but since the topic was brought up more than once here now... Fact of the matter is that in countries like Germany (which I am not from) driving 100 and more MPH on the highway is not unusual and is legal. Some drive way, way faster. And if you read the statistics, less people die from accidents proportionally to population/car owners than in the US. Not sure if it has to do with poor design of highways in the US, really bad driving abilities and driving habits there, unfortunate automatic transmission that prevails in that country. Bottom line is that one can prove you wrong in believing that 100 MPH is bad and your 55 or 65 MPH is good.

All I am trying to find out is whether anybody was successful in removing the speed governor in Mazda 3.

no, no one has been successful in doing it....maybe if you get a standalone ECU then you can get rid of it and also tune the engine. There is a sponsor that re-flashes ECU''s for the 2.0 and 2.3L engines but you would have to take your ECU out and ship it to him which is risky IMO and its a set tune so you can''t re-tune it if you wanted.

You stated it right there. the roads in Germany were built from scratch better tha US roads, and they are also kept up in better condition. So driving at high speeds is alot safer over there. Also a good bit of Gerrmany has gone to posted speed limits due to population growth so even over there they are seeing 100mph speeds aren''t the best idea when it comes to safety. Also note a majorith of the world lives with posted speed limits under 100mph so it''s not just a US thing. My intent on posting was to hopefully deter future 3 owners from going an excessive speed and harming themselves or others. Good luck in finding what your looking for.

Thank you for the suggestion. Would you be able to share the name of the company retuning the Mazda 3 ECU? I found Upsolute and Rocketchip but neither lists 2.3L Mazda 3 among the cars they retune.

it was someone on mazda3forums..com check there i deleted his messages from my inbox i guess since i can''t see them there anymore. They are in orlando fl from what i remeber and costs about 500.

Personally, the only reeason I could see the need to get rid of the governor is only if you are competing on a closed track. Otherwise a usless mod IMHO...

You also have to consider that in Germany they don''t just hand out driver''s licenses like we do here either.
I can''t quote it, but about 6 yrs ago R&T magazine did an article on what it takes to get a German drivers license, and it ain''t easy, and it certainly ain''t cheap. It''s expensive and time consuming, so you have to be serious about getting one in the first place.
They are better driver''s... more attentive and aware than the cell phone talker/texters and stereo blasters that we put up with here.
I don''t know what I would''ve done had it cost me $3000 (what I remember them saying it cost in Germany) when I was 16 just to get my driver''s license, but I think it''s time we look real hard at the licensing process here in this country. I have always taken awareness in driving very seriously.
