all that looks to me is like a potential rust spot now that you stripped the paint off. As you see, there is a screw going thru the sheet metal, its not making the ground through that little piece of metal you are refering to, that is just something to hold it in place. The threads of the screw are making the contact. I wouldn't do that to my car - like i said, rust spot waiting to happen. mike

lucky for me, in AZ we dont get rust. And also, the ring that the screw goes thru does conduct electricity, so if the area that it touches is bare metal, it shoild in fact improve electrical current

Ok I can see some of you dont know how electricity works. So let me try and educate you folks by using a thought/picture process. Picture a straw just like the ones used in a McDonalds soda cup. Its ok to use this straw when you need just a slurp. But when you need a gallon it isnt very efficient.s Now picture electricity just as you would water. It flows just like water and needs an adequate "hose" if you would to power whatever you have connected to it. Lets take this analogy into the Mazda's engine compartment. You have a metal washer connected to the battery and the cars frame which makes a circuit so the car can start and power everything in it. The headlights, transmission, stereo, heater and ac system plus all the things that you have in your car that need power are all somehow connected to the frame of the car. ALL the energy is passing through just a hairs width of metal. Yes you are correct that the screw that holds the washer down is screwed into the frame. And it does provide a grounding point. But the actual surface area of the bare metal touching that screw is maybe the same surface area of one of the letters on a dime. So basically what is happening is you are slurping through a straw that is in a 5 gallon bucket. Yes you are gtting water but not as much as you should be getting especially compared to using a hose. So when you scrape the paint off you are taking the straw out of the pictre and now are using a hose! You are creating a surface are hundreds of times larger then you had to let the electricity flow at a much larger scale at one time. I hope you can understand this. If not then I apologize. You dont need to do anything to your car. but it DOES resolves a few issues people have mentioned. I am one of those people who had a problem with my car almost dieng at the stop sign sometimes. Its cause the electricity didnt have a wide enough highway to travel on! You try driving down a small dirt road and see how fast you can go! Sure you might get a rust spot like 5 years from now. All you gotta do is sand it off! You have more of a chance at getting rust near your door than this area cause water doesnt get in way up near the wheel well. Its as high as the windshield almost. Anyway, if you dont want to do it than dont. But if you have problems with slugishness, stalling or odd rpm at 1K and 500 I suggest this. Everybody who tried it had positive results.........
