Hi,

Is it ok (safe) to tow a small enclosed U-Haul trailer with the Mazda 3? I want to have a hitch with wires install for it and I called my Mazda dealer and they said I couldn''t tow with this car. They told me they could install the hitch only with no wires (for the lights)!

It can be done, but it''s not a real good idea, not even w/the MTX... take my personal word for it.

Sure, but what would you put in it?  I''ve seen those things up close and personal and they are tiny and badly configured.

Can it pull it?  Sure.
Would I recommend pulling something that size knowing how heavy they can be when full?  No.
Would doing it despite the car coping it possibly void your warranty?  Yes.

My personal suggestion is not to pull anything larger than an open utility trailer with maybe a motorcycle or two/watercraft, etc. on it.  500-1000 pounds shouldn''t be too bad on the car, but remember if you have drivetrain problems down the road (no pun intended) and the dealer can prove you towed with the car they''ll void the powertrain portion of the warranty.  You could always have them install the hitch and then do the wiring yourself.... it''s super easy.... and remove it prior to taking your car to the dealer.  Or you could have another shop install the hitch and if the dealer questions the wiring tell them that the other shop installs the wiring on all their hitch installs.  Or you could get a little light that connects to the empty hitch and plugs into the wiring (think extra brake light) and say that''s why you want the wiring.

virgin, I assume that''s just a really similar looking 3 to your car as far as Mazda''s concerned. ;)

As a matter of fact.... it is my car, w/a U-Haul behind it. I have a permanently installed Draw-Tite hitch.

It was just for camping stuff so I don''t think it would be more than 200 pounds
