Couldn''t find a thread on this, so... - 7/17/2008 10:10:18 PM    MazdaTechie   Posts: 40 Joined: 7/1/2008 Status: offline ...maybe I still missed something.  If so, refer me. =>  Anyway, I''ve got a ''98 Protege LX, tire size 185/65/14.  It seems even with proper rotations (both in interval and method) and keeping the tires properly inflated, this thing eats tires.  I rotate every 3000 when I change my oil.  Industry suggests 5000, but the owner''s manual states every 3750.  So really, I rotate a bit early.  If anything that should make ''em last longer.  Or at least wear evenly, which they do.  I generally drive spiritedly, but I don''t go around peeling out.  My only problem is running out of tread too quickly.  When a tire is warranted to last 70,000 miles and I get less than 30K out of the set with proper maintenance, that''s not cool.  Although I could pursue the mileage warranty perhaps (although I may get shot down since I don''t have written records of rotations and suchI just do it myself), I just have a hard time believing that 4 tires of the same kind could all be defective in such a way as to wear perfectly evenly, but all wear out equally fast. So my question(s) is/are, do proteges eat tires?  Is it just spirited driving in a relatively lightweight car?  Am I doomed to short-lived tires and frequent set purchases, even when the tire maker says it''ll last anywhere from 70 to 90K? _____________________________ Daniel Post #: 1

If your toe or camber is off it will eat up your tires. The best way to check what angle you need fixed is to look at how the tire is wearing. If the inside is wearing faster than the outsie of the tire or vice versa then its your camber, but if it is wearing across the tire face like in a diagnal pattern then its your toe. The tires are all wearing evenly.  No weird camber or toe wear.  The car drives straight.  I''m a mazda tech and I''ve aligned the car.  It''s never been in a serious accidentonly 5 or less bumps that didn''t ever do anything to compromise the 5 mph bumpers. So the problem is not that the tires are wearing unevenly or chopping or anythingit''s that even though they ARE wearing evenly, and even though I''ve rotated them religiously and maintained proper tire pressure, they''re all running out of tread at less than 30,000 miles when they''re warranted for 70,000. We''ll see how they fare...80,000 miles is only ~2.5 years of driving for me.
