i had to move my girlfriends 96 mazda 626 from where she was living. Had to undo the steering column to get the wheels turned straigt, and undo the console to get to the gear shift lock, so I could get it on my trailer. Her kids lost the key and the remote.
I know we can take the title down and get a key and remote from what I read, but we really don't have the money and I don't know if the car is really worth it,to spend getting the key from the dealer.

My question is: does this 96 have a chip in the key, or would any duplicate work? Next, if the battery's been disconnected and I put one in, and have a duplicate key, will the antitheft or kill keep me from trying to start the car?
Thanks for anykind of helpful advice.

well your in luck, the 96 626 cuttoff switch for stock anti-theft is in the trunk near the rear left speaker, just switch it off, if it has an ignition kill system its aftermarket, and odds are the switch for it is right above the interior fuse pannel by the drivers left foot, switch it off as well #2 the 626's dont have chips in the key, so a duplicate would easily work....a replacement key from the dealer would cost you about $150-$200 cause they have to find the serial # then mold it so its kind of expensive, if you want to keep costs very low try one of these two options.......go to a junkyard and just buy a used steering column and slap that sucker in, comes with the ignition in it and odds are the junkyard can give you a key that works on it too, option two is go to same said junkyard, and get a used ignition , probably comes with a key also, going through the dealer for anything on a 626 should be your last resort ever, 626's are horrible to work on any any mechanic in thier right mind will charge you an arm and a leg to proform service on it :-)
