THE AC IN MY CAR IS BLOWING HOT AIR MY MECHANIC SAID THAT THE EVAP HAD TO BE REPLACED FOR ABOUT $500 BECAUSE THE DASH HAS TO BE REMOVED.  DOES THIS SOUND RIGHT?  DOES ANYONE HAVE A PICTURE OF THE AC SYSTEM?

You should be able to get the layout of the a/c in either a Chiltons or Haynes manual.

500.00?  is that just labor, or parts AND labor?   if it's both, you should find another "mechanic", cause this one is blowing more hot air than your a/c.  an evaporator, TA01-61-J10B, suggested list price is 655.50.   you will probably also need an expansion valve, TA01-61-J14, 132.20, and a drier-T001-61-501, 225.80.  even at discounted pricing, 466.06, 93.99, 160.54, the parts alone are WAY over 500.   then there is the nagging question, does your "mechanic" know what he is doing?  for instance, the a/c system is climate control.  which means the mixing of heat and cold to get the set temperature.  this is done by blende doors.  so, if the system is set to cold, say 65 deg, and it is blowing hot, say 95 deg, then probably the operation of the blende doors is in question.  also, if the system is blowing hot thru the defrost mode, again, it AINT the evaporator.  because like all german cars, the japanese cars default to the defrost mode when there is something wrong with the hvac.  so, if your "mechanic" dont know that, you need to find a REAL mechanic.
it's the hvac amplifier.  get one off ebay.  25 bucks.  change it yourself.  takes about half an hour.  your "mechanic" can probably do it in 2 and charge you for 4.  hours, that is.

keninn.... i've got a post "To Air Is Human" and you may have answered it. I get cold air, but only if I set the climate control to 65 degrees. Do u figure it's a blende door or hvac amplifier?

Thanks for any help.

well, the amplifier controls the blende doors.   here's my thoughts.  if the system blows cold at ANY temp, it aint the evap.  next, you can get a good used amplifier for about 25 bucks.  it takes about 30 minutes to change.  it is very easy to do.  so, if you want to take your car to some bozo who has never even seen one before, and pay them hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars, vs spend 25 bucks and 30 minutes, hmmmm.   lessee now, take the  car, spend lots of money, long down time, or 25 bucks and 30 minutes,  hmmm.   what do YOU think?

keninn... i'm with you. My question is only to get started in the right direction. I can do anything on a car. But rather than spend 2-3 hrs. trying to figure out what MIGHT be wrong, i'd rather get some help 1st. Then i can spend the 2-3 hrs. i saved doing what i love best... goofing off.

thanks for the help!
