I just purchased a 2002 Tribute and noticed that at night there is no illumination of the odmeter/Shift Indicator.  Is that normal or is there a lighting problem?

Skydiver69, there should be illumination when you turn on the dash lights.  My backlight went out after six years or so, and I currently use a small flashlight as needed.  It's been a year or so driving this way.

To anyone:  my 01 Tribute odometer backlight is out.  Does anyone know which fuse amp rating and location number replaces it?  I cannot find this info in my manual.  Removing fuses is not easy; I thought of removing each one to test.  Thanks.

Someone in this or another Mazda forum suggested removing the dash to replace the odometer light.  That is correct.  I confirmed this with a Mazda technician today.  At $125 per hour for labor, I said no thanks.

To replace the back light on the odometer does not require the entire dash to be removed.  There is another formum where an individual give step by step instructions.  He says that it took him 15 minutes in the dealer parking lot to replace it.  He was there because he had to purchase the bulb from them.  There are two screws on the underside of the clust panel in front of the driver.  You remove these two screws and then carefully work the inner panel out.  There are several clips to watch for.  Once this is pulled out replace the bulb and reverse the procedure to complete.

I suggest that you confide in someone who is mechanically inclined if you are not to insure that the cluster panel does not get broken.  That could get expensive.

Another forum on this site or on another site? I would love to find that procedure to take to my mechanic so that he will not take the entire dash out for a quick job. The bulb on my 2003 just burned out.

Thanks for posting this information!

EDIT:  I talked to my repair shop, and they are not aware of this quick method for changing the bulb. If I can provide it to them, they will be glad to use it.
