I'm a new Mazda owner ('03 Protege 5) and I really love my new car! I especially loved the radio/head unit in it (6 disk changer, subwoofer, etc.), but really wanted to be able to use my iPod in the car, so I decided to put in a AuxMod. I've changed out car stereos before, but this entire episode was a fiasco from the word "go." First, I couldn't get the head unit out. I looked at this forum and the internet in general, bought Ford radio harnesses, even tried fashioning something out of coat hangers, but nothing worked. Then I decided to try to go through the a/c control area, but became concerned that I'd do damage or disconnect something I couldn't reconnect, so I abandoned that idea. My wife found she could get her hands in the open ash tray area and in the empty slot where the minidisc player/cassette player would have been, and was able to plug in the module...which fell out the first time I tried to plug a cable into it. She plugged it in again (this time remembering the sticky tape), only to find out that we'd blown one of the fuses (one of the "general protection" ones also related to the dome light and lighting for the head unit). I replaced the fuse, heard the cd changer clicking, and thought I was in the clear until I tried to use the head unit and found that all it will do is light up...no sound, no display, no nothing! I called a Mazda dealership and they said there is no security code on this unit, or it would be displaying a "lockout" message. All fuses check out, and when the AuxMod was removed the unit still didn't work. Did I really "blow" the head unit? Any info is greatly appreciated!
