I'm looking for a hardtop that is fairly good condition. It doesn't matter the color cause it will be custom painted anyway. Its going on a 92 miata. Minor blemishes not a prob as long as their easily fixed. My email is sherry068@centurytel.net Please email me with any offers. Thanks.

Do you mean a permanent hardtop or a convertible hardtop?  There has never been a miata from the factory with a permanent hardtop roof.  They''re all convertibles.  If you mean a convertible hardtop, to my knowledge those have only been made in the most recent years.  Maybe ''05 or ''06, but I think just ''07 and ''08.  Anything else would be entirely custom.

I''m so glad though that they got smart and finally started putting real glass in for the back window on the ragtops.  That flexible plastic stuff was junk.

How long have you been a Mazda tech?

I admit I haven''t for very long.  Approaching 6 months.  I''ve been working on cars both for fun and for work since I got my first car at 17 (I''m 24 now), but I started at this dealership late January.  Classic Lincoln Mercury Mazda.  I started out in the Lincoln/Mercury shop as an oil changer, and when they got rid of an unruly kid in the Mazda shop, they picked me to fill the spot.  Excellent opportunity.  Domestic make shops still specialize everythingyou have your oil change guys, brakes guys, diagnostic guys, etc.  Mazda and many import make shops train their techs to be ''bumper to bumper''.  So like I saidnot a master yetfar from it.  But I learn more every day, and I''m happy to be getting a LOT more than oil changes lol.

1) There was actually a hardtop Miata prototype. Not a production model though. http://www.miata.net/news/images/MiataCoupe2.jpg

2) The hard tops from 1988 to 2004 are all interchaneable. The only "gotchas" are the defroster plug is different on earlier tops, and I _think_ you might need some kind of change of latches if going from an NA to an NB. Not entirely sure on that last bit, a a quick search should confirm.

3) The best place to find a hard top is either Craigslist, or the classifieds on miata.net. Expect to pay between $800 to $1200 for a used one unless you find a great deal. They used to be less expensive, but the demand for them due to the popularity of Spec Miata has driven the prices up. Still, compared to $2800 for a new on from Mazda, $1K is a deal. Espescially if you can find one in your color. Even though the OP''s question is almost a year old now, I figure this info will turn up for future searches.

I''ve never heard of or seen a factory miata permanent hardtop put into production.  Are you suggesting that if I wanted to, I could go to the parts guy at my store and order a hardtop to fit to a ''95 mx-5?

BTW the miata didn''t hit production until 1990.

Okay I looked around, and now I get what you''re talking about.  Haven''t seen it until now, but I didn''t know you meant a removable hardtop.  I thought you were trying to say that there have been production miatas with permanent, part-of-the-body hardtops, for all these years.  Just a misunderstanding I suppose.

Well okay.  In the online training I''ve taken from Mazda, they said 1990.  However, what was probably meant was that 1990 was the first model year.  In that case, they showed up at whatever point in ''89 that Mazda and other car makers started releasing the new 1990 model year cars.  Makes sense to me heh. =>
