Car is a 2004 RX8 with 55k, 6spd Daughter drove the car to the store and back, bout 15miles or so(we live in the country). Ran fine, went to leave the house 30 minutes later and the car would turn over but no start. Batt is up to snuff it loads checks fine, all plugs are getting spark and I can hear the fuel pump run periodically.. Question's #1: I guess these rotary's are prone to flooding? Tips for firing it back off? #2: When the engines turns over, seems to not have any compression. Is this normal with a rotary? Starter turns the engine rather quickly... Sorry I am a diesel guy..... Thanks..

if it's not turning over i'm assuming it's the compression no compression means you have to have the engine replaced/remanufactured. The rx8's run on compression without it, it doesn't work. It might not be that but if it is, and you don't have warranty...ouchies. Mine had a really bad idling problem i took it in and they found out i had some crack which caused low compression and since rx8's run on compression i had to have a remanufactured engine. This is common. You could probably say you saw there was a recall online for a low compression problem and see if you can get it fixed due to the recall. alot of rx8's have this. i have not heard of them being prone to flooding so i can't answer that.

Yes they can flood. Mazda put a booklet with the owners manual giving procedures on how to remedy it.

Yeah, my favorite part is that they recommend that you rev the motor to 7k when you're parking the car, and shut the motor off at 7k. This burns the excess fuel off so there's little chance of flooding when you get back out of the store. And yes, you'll look (and sound) like an idiot when you do it.

Yes it is very common that they flood. Even though I have only had one in 28k. When mine happened I followed the owners manual procedure with no luck! so I went to the rx8club.com forum and found a thread on deflooding in under 5 mins which uses washer fluid. I done my own version of the post and it worked. I then called my bud at the local dealer and told him what I did and then asked him what they do when people have them towed in. He said If you look down between the engine and the windshield washer fluid bottle on the passenger side of the engine you will see two ports coming out of the rotor housing, they are copper looking with caps on them. Take the caps off and get a can of WD-40 and put two quick squirts of it into each port. Put caps back on and then get in the car, turn switch on, push gas pedal to the floor, turn switch to start, continue this until it starts. After it starts you will have to rev engine to blow out the WD-40. It should not take that long to do this, if you want once it starts to idle fine take it for a drive and rev until you hear the beep a couple of times. During the reving procedure you might see the CEL light flash but it should quit. If not then you will need to carry it to the dealer. Hope this helps!! OH he also said once this happens the plugs need to be replcaed more than likely.
