Hello Folks,

I have a 1992 Mazda 323.

Could someone be so kind as to tell me where the manual transmission lug nut is which will allow for the transmission oil to be drained. Secondly, where is the "fill" nut so that I can add new oil???

Is this a hard procedure to perform? I don't have a lift only a jack. Any first hand experience knowledge would be appreciated.

Regards,

John

The drain plug is on the bottom, kind of in the middle of the trans. Should be gold colored and will take a 24 mm socket to remove. The refill is done by removing the speedometer gear. Is on the backside of the trans. Just remove the 10mm bolt and pull the entire speedo head and cable out. If engine is SOHC then trans will take 2.8 qts to refill. If DOHC then will take 3.5 qts. Use 75w-80 or 75w-90 gear oil to refill.

What do SOHC and DOHC mean? Also I bought some 85W-140....? Can I still use what I have? Car has 152,500 miles.

Thanks again for you help on this project!

Sorry about that. SOHC is refering to if your engine is a Single OverHead Cam or a Dual OverHead Cam. 85w-140 is a pretty heavy oil for a transmission. Would be ok in a rear differential though.

If you use 85W -140 you will have a hard time shifting gears, especially when it gets cold.

Is ok lapinkulta. We all have to learn new stuff. Take a look at where your spark plug wires connect to the spark plugs. If the plugs are arranged down the middle of valve cover it will be a DOHC. If the plugs are on the side of the cylinder head near the exhaust manifold then is a single cam. Went a took a pic of the engine in my 91 323 that has the single cam engine to clarify.

I got the same as you! By the way what is the life of these cars? Do many people have them over 200K. I don't see too many of these fine little cars around.

Mine is still young with only 174k miles on it. Is about due for a set of plugs and checkup and a little overdue for an oil change by 400 miles but otherwise in great shape. There is a topic in this group about posting with pics of your car that was started by Alucard where we began to post some pics of our own cars. Look around in the 323,626,929 area and you will find it. I do not know if Alucard posted the mileage but he is a great guy that has questions about stuff as well. Is kind of neat to get to know you all a little more around the country and world by talking thru these posts. Hope the trans oil change goes well and we will see what the check engine light is about.

Actually, I found the problem! I followed the circuit from the O2 module to its connection point and noticed that an aftermarket sensor was used. In turn the circuit was spliced and it was at this point that the splice had come apart. Performed a simple re-wire and now I'm back up and running.

MY 323 is nothing special. I got it back in Feburary of 2004 for $650 at an auto auction. Then I riped the back seats out and build a platform onto which I can transport packages and the like. Got a small B&W T.V. built into the cockpit too..... Only got one warning about it thus far...
