Here in the netherlands diesel was about 1 euro per liter (about 1,44 USD) when I bought the 3 (my 1st diesel) in nov 06. It then cost me about 45 euros (about 65 USD) to fill up 45 liter (almost 12 gallons), thats about all it takes with meter on E and fuellight on some 20-50 km although there is a 55 liter tank, guess a big safety margin as you dont want to run a diesel out of fuel.

These 45 liters wil take me around 800 km (about 500 miles) so that would be around 42 miles per gallon,

At the moment diesel is up to about 1.15 euro/lit and gasoline is about 1.48 euro/lit.

I may add that I am not a slow driver .
A 1.6 engine with 110 hp doesnt seem like much but in this very modern diesel (common rail, double overhead cam, 16 valve, variable turbovanes, intercooler, 7 stage injection) it is extremely torquey. And it can still easily be chiptuned to 130+ hp. Nothing wrong with that at a weight of 1250 kg's

Here you can see a picture when of my car when I just picked it up from the dealer:

I only put in 87 octane. In NY (where we have the highest gas tax in the country!) that is at $3.20/gal. I put in about $40. I make sure i never reach more than $40. The price for 89 is $3.45/gal and 93 is $3.65/gal.

Ah... you have a 2.3 auto don't you?  Help me remember.
If so I'd say that's not bad, but it depends on the mileage traveled, of course.
I have the 2.3 5-sp and put in roughly 10-11 gals @ +/-290.

Mmm..these USA gas prices also more then 3 doubled since I lived there in the 80ties...
I remember paying around $1 for regular unleaded.
Dont think the euro spec cars would run good in the 87-91 octane range.
The common types here are 95 and 98 octane. Most people tank 95, some older or exotic cars require 98 and some affecionados put 98 in there car because performance could be up a few percentage points.

There's a full service gas station near my work that sells 100 octane fuel!!  I don't even want to know the price of that stuff!! Well, I might have to check one of these days because now I'm curious.

I used to buy several gals of 102 in NJ to boost the octane in my old Volvo sedan!!  W/the mods I made, regular pump gas, even 94 Amoco wasn't enough for her.  It was well over $2.00/gal even then (94 was 0.60-0.70/gal, iirc!!)  For the time, it was an expensive car to fill up.
