Okay,  I have a 1993 Mazda MX3 1.6 sohc.   and it's pretty slow as it is... but i have a turbo, and i'm trying to see if the motor can hold up to a turbo.. i'm not looking for a 20+ boost or anything like that... but i'd be happy with 5lbs. of boost...( for the time being) does anybody know if the motor can hold up to any boost at all?  or which way would be a good way to gain horsepower... (without doing a motor swap)?

well the 1.6 SOHC is not good for boost at all!  dont even bother cause it will blow up!  Honestly you can swap in a BPT with 180HP for about $2500 all said and done!

what about for the DOHC? i just got a 95 and im toying with the idea of putting a turbo on it. but im not sure how much boost the motor will handle(i.e. forged rods/pistons). will the motor handle only low boost, or can you really push these motors to 12-15lbs? i had a 86 t-bird turbo coupe, that could more than handle 20-25lbs of boost.

i have a 95 mx3 rs as well..hate the ponies it puts out which is next to nothing..ive had mine for about 2 years now and have thought of the same thing..turbo!! but did my research asked my questions on the mx3 forum...and just like the sohc waste of time, both those motors are just too weak for that kinda mod..okay so if you build the motor up it could probably handle it but the money and work you would put in to that would be too much!! plus its not just the motor you have to worry about the f series tranny thats in our cars is weak as crap too especially if you beat on it which you would because why not you have a turbo! and youd probably blow the tranny..like lambomx3 said best bet is a bpt motor 180hp..or even a bp motor from an 91-97 escort gt or 90-94 protege which has 130hp and those motors can handle boost seen it done many of times with good results...just somehting to think about!!
