OK.  Now (with the light switch "on") measure the voltage coming out from the dimmer knob, first try at both extremes of rotation of the knob.  If you don't get voltage either way, and in the intermediate positions, you have a bad dimmer switch.  You can try a jumper wire to ensure that the rest of the circuit is OK, and the dash lights should then come on.  If you can live with dash lights just being "on" when the lights are on (without having adjustment capability) just bypass this switch.  I did just that on my old VW bug when its dimmer portion of the switch shorted out; then it essentially comes on same as the parking lights coming on.

You mean "through", not "threw".
So was there current going to the dimmer switch when the headlights were turned on?  Post back with that information.  If so, what happens when you "jump" the dimmer switch (with the headlight switch on, of course)?  Post back with that information.  What were you using to ground your test light or voltmeter when you did this test?  Post back with that information.

So was there current going to the dimmer switch when the headlights were turned on?  Post back with that information. If not, I'd personally tap into the parking light circuit and have them come on whenever the parking lights are on.  What if the parking lights and taillights also don't work - then you've isolated the problem - work back to the light switch.

Burnt wires, not good - in your case I'd tap into the parking light/tail light circuit (assuming that they work) for your dash lights.
