I have a 2004 3i for about 10 months. I always thought it was odd, but didn't notice till now that my trunk isn't very springy or has any spring in it at all. When I pop the truck or use the key, it just unlatches. As you know the rear of the car is totally smooth, so there are not handles. So I either have to pry it open from the edge or just the key to lift the panel. Is that normal for the 3i? No spring for a release. I compared it to my roomates ford taurus and when you pop the trunk, it flys all the way open. I am wondering if my release was defective when I bought the car new.

Thanks for any info.

i would assume that is an abnormal function. never have i had any experience with your vehicle, but from the many others that had trunk releases, the least you should get is for the trunk to bounch maybe an inch which allows for you to easily place your hand in the opening to pull it up. you should have the shop look at it.

Definitely take to your dealer for a fix. If your 3 is a 4 door with last 6 digits of VIN lower than 219021, there is an updated rear latch and striker to fix that exact problem.

I have an 05 3s and it doesn't spring up either and i live in a cold climate area and when its really cold the trunk freezes and i can barely stick my finger under the trunk to lift it.
