That sucks about your paint though. What happened and what did the (nice) officer say about the damage? Depending on the circumstances (you weren't running drugs or illegal alcohol, were you?), I'd be puttin' in a claim if I wuz U. Take plenty of pictures ASAP.

Don't know why I'm jumping in on this one. But, if you look up the handles on one of the dealer ads on this page. (They have a parts look up catalogue) You will see that the parts cataloge lists a handle (sedan) (hatchback) for the left side and lists one for the right side. Knowing parts and how the #'s work. I would have to agree with UBM. If there are indeed two different part #'s. They are not interchangable. No matter what it looks like on the outside.

its not exactly nonsensical they just decided (to my knowledge) that because they have no keyless entry they need another way to get into the car.. and this was the way.. with the keyless entry its a simple tap of the button twice. and your in the car. they probably decided that it wasnt necessary for another keyhole with the keyless entry... yet for the GX (I for the states) itm ust have it because there is no other way to get in but either put a keyhole in there orr have the person reach for the lock every time.

If you look on the link, on the picture of the back of the car ir shows the lock on the right side of the trunk lid just below the body line almost inline with the inside corner of the tail light.
BTW I saw a 4 door M3 with the right side door lock yesterday, but my 1.0 mp phone camera didn't get a good shot of it

i dunno if we're still on topic, but i have the base model '07 mazda3, and i have a key hole:
in the driver's door
in the passenger's door
in the trunk.

If you slide it over the roof as you suggest, when you rotate it ... you turn it upside down. And the handle won't work properly if the top becomes the bottom. And you do have to rotate it, so the handle part faces outward.

Why? The handles are symetrical top to bottom. They are not mirror images of each other, as with the old thumb release handles. They are exactly the same! As long as the painted side stays out, and the lock hole faces backward the handle should easily fit the bodywork.
As Chris suggested though, the internals may be slightly different left to right. I don't have proof either way, but I'm guessing that he was looking @ part numbers, one for the locking handle and the other w/o the lock hole. However, if you have a base "i" model w/both front doors locking, I'd bet the part numbers are exactly the same.
It simply makes sense that they wouldn't waste time and money on something that isn't necessary. So if the "i" model requires two locking doors, 1 L & 1 R, it would make perfect sense to simply use two of the same handle, flipped over.
