The remote start has existed for a long time (at least a decade), I haven't read anywhere that keys are going away. Seems to me there are MAJOR security issues to trying to remove the key from the equation of driving a car. Cars do get dead batteries, systems screw up. Someone already menioned their keyfob was temporarily dead - the key allowed them to continue to function - and I know of a few people who accidentally put their keyfob through the washing machine and dryer, thus destroying it. Seems to me there will always have to be a plan B of some kind. If anything makes the key go away, my guess is it will be fingerprint or retinal scan technology. These technologies are very much in their infancy.

You may very well be right, UBM. As it is though, keys, especially car keys seem to be getting bigger and bigger. The flip out key from '05+ is even bigger and clumsier than my '04 key and it's key fob. Oh, God, when will it end!!!! The humanity!

well the fingerprint scanning is just being introduced to the automobile market ( at least on the affordable cars now), but the key wont disappear. what i mean by saying its gonna get replaced is that newer "keys" are coming out that have no other purpose but to be present when the car, or watever it may be, is on or entered. am i making ne sense? quote:

well I missed all the fun......a bit of distraction: i came across a book by Alex Roy, titled 'the driver', the book talks about his polizei 144 team and the outlaw racing world he is in......didn't get a chance to finish the book at the Barnes&Noble, but i was fancinated by that. Maybe this is a non-thing to you guys, but to me it's *very* interesting that someone can have this kind of lifestyle, racing thru commuting traffic in Rome anf other crazy places......shall we start a new thread?

Hmmm? I'll have to look into that. When I was 15-16 and learning how to drive, I took a great interest in reading books by race drivers... one of Jackie Stewert's books comes to mind. I wanted to learn how the best drive well, drive fast and do it safely. I think it helped. 10 years later I went ot Pocono International Raceway (just Pocono Raceway then) and took a High-Performance driving course (3 days) from the Bertyl Roos school of HP driving. That was a TOTAL blast!! I was on my way to a competition licence and I always wanted to go back to continue on that path. But I never did. Life got in the way (and my pocket book too.)

I rented a Nissan Altima auto-tranny in MT last week ,and it had no key - just a FOB. It had a button on the dash for starting and stopping the car. as long as the FOB was near the car, it could be started. And Yes, I pushed the stop button while driving down the road, and it killed the engine - I had to put the car in Park and step on the break in order to start it again. If you never lock, or unlock the doors, this seems like a good idea - otherwise I was always digging in my pocket to perform this task, as normally the keys would be in my hand already.
