Shirley Muldowney arguably is the most significant female sports figure of the last century, having competed not only against women, but also against men – and with great success. She opened the door for women in drag racing decades ago, and many women today are able to walk through that door when given the right opportunity.

Watch out, little sis might be the real driver in the family.

a few more little sisters....
Melanie Troxel (Top Fuel), Hillary Will (Top Fuel), Erica Enders (Pro Stock), Karen Stoffer (Pro Stock Motorcycle) and Angelle Sampey (Pro Stock Motorcycle) – currently compete at the top level of NHRA competition, and each one credits Muldowney with blazing the path they currently travel.

Troxel and Will compete in the same type of car that Shirley Muldowney raced. But when Muldowney was racing, top speeds were around 280 mph. Troxel and Will are racing at speeds approaching 330 mph.

And of course Danica Patrick started fourth in the Indy 500 May 29, 2005 driving for Rahal Letterman Racing. After
surviving numerous problems in the race, the 23 y/o rookie ended up leading the race at the end and
almost won! She finished fourth. It was the most exciting Indianapolis 500 in decades.

Then, in 2006, Danica started in 8th, was capable of winning once again, and finished in 8th. It too
was one of the most exciting races in decades, and of course wins and records in 2007 and excellent runs so far in 2008, her most disappointing loss came about because of slow pit crews.....all men!

NASCAR has several women who are attempting to break into Cup racing. Chrissy Wallace is one of those drivers. Chrissy is looking for a breakthrough win in the Craftsman Truck Series. She recently stated "I think I could be the first female to win a race in trucks. That's my goal. That's my dream. I'm going to go racing!"
