I have a 93 LX that has just under 200,000 miles on it and it is guttless going up hills and over revs when shifting gears (5 speed). The only aftermarket item is the MSD coil. The cap, rotor, plugs, wires, dist, fuel pump, water pump, timing belt, tensoners and the little temp sensor on the bottom of the throttlebody,are all new.  Could the MSD coil be causing any problems, it has been on the car for longer than I have owned it. I am going to replace the muffler and cat this week so it will pass emissions. I just want the damn thing to run better going up hills.
I am also wondering what the year and model interchange on the 1.8 DOHC motor is? I have been told 93 and up but have seen 92's with what seems to be the same motor.

I am not new to working on cars just newer ones (anything newer that 74 pisses me off).

You already have the biggest motor they put in there, and the most reliable.  Try dumping the MSD coil and get a Mazda one.  I know on our race car we throw the MSD boxes away after a month.  It is the cheapets thing to try that you haven't already tried. Muffler and CAT will definitely help...

Thanks for the reply, now I am thinking that the clutch may be going. it over revs between shifts and if you give it gas while moving or going up hills it will rev up and not acellerate until it catches up with its self (kinda like a tourqe converter effect) and you only have to press the clutch petal down about 1/4 inch for it to work. It seems to me that you should have to push it down alot more than 1/4 inch.
I was told by the previous owner that it started the over reving between shifts after their daughter drove it on the freeway in 4th gear at 65mph not realizing that there was a 5th gear. Im not going to cry about doing a clutch if I have to (but I would prefer not to have to do it) because it was a free car.

Driving the car at 65 in 4th isn't going to damage anything.  But if she was playing "pop the clutch" it would.  Would you tell your dad if you were doing it to his car????   My father could never figure out why the rear tires on his Bonneville 400 wore so much faster than the front did.   Funny that!!  The clutch might just need to be readjusted.   Seems a bit high.  But it may have been adjusted for a shorter driver at one time.

Any ideas on what could be causing the over reving?

LOL, My moms 85 S-10 Blazer. I didn't have to tell my dad, he knew cause he did it too (we dropped a 350 in it).

Yeah, might be the clutch slipping.  Although you might be able to adjust where it is grabbing.
