I am interested in buying a 2004 miata mazdaspeed with only 6000 miles on it, and am sure I will be thrilled with the purchase, But have a few questions?? I find info. galore on the 2005 miata mazdaspeed model, but not alot on the 2004... What gives?? Was there a big change in design between the two years?? Are they the same??? It sounds as if they are closely identical, by what I have read but want to reassure myself. If I purchase the 2004 and then find the 2005 is so much better I do not want to be disappointed in any way. Selling my Harley for a sportscar is all new territory for me, and a little nerve racking so the best decision is imperative to my overall vehichular happiness. Thanks for any input you may have.. Mike

According to the Mazdaspeed website, there was no 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata. It was only 2005.

I drive a 2004 MX-5 Mazdaspeed. It was #27 out of 44 built on a Wednesday in April in Japan. The glove box manual says Miata and I still own a '92 Miata B Pkg that I restored for my kids to drive. Red Mica paint, crazy speed, nice racing wheels. All stock from Japan with the only enhancements being custom floor mats, a chrome rollbar and an aux ipod jack for the stereo. They really exist in a small number and are even more fun than my '92. I like the way the '92 corners but with the MX-5 Mazdaspeed, threats from trucks and large vehicles instantly become dots in the rearview mirror. I don't advocate it but mine may have been seen going ~142 MPH on a very empty stretch of I-5 in So Cal. Without driving crazy, just having the turbo at 4500 rpm's and a 6-speed manual transmission is a blast. If you jump on the car, you go through the 6 gears very quickly. No maintenance issues or problems at all. Only real problem is that the very cool profile, the gold flecks in the red mica paint and the sound of the car seems to create bizarre psychological affects on other motorists. I cannot count how many soccer moms in minivans or SUV's try to jump on the gas at a stoplight as if they will prove that their gas guzzling, large box is also a factory turbo installed sports car with unidirection racing tires and extreme acceleration. Most days I try to be cool about it but when you get the look from a person who doesn't understand the simple physics that gurantee his/her failure, it sometimes gets under your skin. I don't want anyone crashing or unsafe but it's the only real unexpected part of the car. With the top down, the red and black seats, chrome rollbar, beautiful paint, throaty exhaust and ridiculous looks are pretty spectacular. ...but for my kids, it all came down to the Bose stereo having an ipod jack... kids.

I just picked up a 04 Speed :) I had to drive a good amount to get it but it was worth it. Such a fun car so far.
