Hi everyone,
I have a check engine light on my 98 626 so Autozone checked it out and there was only one code (p0400 i think). Anyway it said egr and the guy said i most likely needed to take out the sensor and clean it. My question is where is it on the engine? Cause i don't wanna pay a $100 to have a shop find it and replace or clean it since i'm sure i can do it myself. Plus i don't want to buy a manual or i just might start to tinker with it too much

Thanks
Jay K.

i have 97 626 v6

this ERG valve is bolted to the engine block on the drivers side. I had to remove the air assembly and IM for that matter inorder to reach it. The EGR solenoid is right below the throttle cable on the back of the IM in front of the fire wall theres a hose leading from the egr valve directly to it.

when you clean it make sure the cleaner does not have a film base because it can cause clogging your best bet is to ust brake parts cleaner soak it for few hours and it should be clean as a whistle that should take care of your probolem and don't forget to reset the computer by taking the neg batt cable off for about 5 min then it your light should go away.

People who work on cars without manuals need to have their heads examined.

I wanted to add to this thread in hopes of helping someone else down the line. I have a 96 626 4cyl. Recently I failed an emissions test due to an EGR fault. Not knowing what this was I brought my car to a local shop, where they explained in great detail that the part was broken and needed to be replaced for a total cost of parts and labor of only $575. Somewhat wary I decided to take the car home and check it out myself. Once I pulled the part I realized the problem was carbon buildup and not a busted diaphram as was explained by the mechanic. Anyways, a bit of brake cleaner and a dental pick cleaned it right up. I reinstalled the component then drove my car around for a week to reset the computer. Problem solved. Total cost $5. Hope this helps someone out down the line. If I learned anything from this, its always get to know your mechanic before you just pull in to any random shop...man there are some sheisty people out there.

Actually, this happened two years back. I have since had to pull the part again and clean it up one more time before taking it in for an inspection. You may have to do the same. The repair is not difficult. Just pull the airbox to give yourself ample working room and get yourself a 10mm socket for the two EGR bolts. I'll be happy to reply to a post if anyone has any questions. Good luck.
