It connects between the steering gear and the knuckle. It may make a noise but would usually only be a one time clunk. Yes it could be an upper strut mount but is should also make the noise when you are not moving and turning the steering wheel. Is this noise something your mechanic is able to make happen as well? The boot of the CV does not necessarily need to be torn open to be noisy. My 91 323 makes a knock noise from the CV and boots are fine. I replaced the OE axle with a remanufacted after market and it started making noise about a month after it was installed. (in reply to Cyclone2652) Post #: 11
