Hi, i live in UK, ive got a 1990 Mazda 323 with a standard 1.6 16 valve engine in it, and I want to replace it with something with a higher output - i've done some research on wikipedia :
1989-1991 - 1.8  (1840 cc) BPT, FI, 16-valve DOHC, turbo, 163 hp (120 kW)/159 ft·lbf (216 N·m)

Would that engine simply drop straight in then (along with its gearbox).
This mazda i've got, i can't be bothered to sell it as its worth nothing, so i want to turn it into a fun trackday car to use at weekends basically. Any tips, hints, and advise would be appreciated.

What other engines do you reckon would be easy to drop in? i'm looking for an output between 150-200 hp (but no more), and the smaller the engine the better, coming with a turbo or something.

Not sure if your chasis is the same as the guys in this link, but it looks like what your thinking about doing with a 1.6L turbo intercooled engine.

Good luck with the conversion and be sure to let us know how it all works out, sounds like a fun project.

The engines in the Ford Probe are made by Mazda and are compatible with 323. The biggest engine you can drop in with the help of a good mechanic is the 1.8 turbo with 184 hp. Here are the specs http://carfolio.com/specifications/models/car/?car=23914
