My dealer has ordered some "Aviation grade" lube to apply where the steering column comes through the bulkhead ! We'll see. Mazda Assist gave same diagnosis.

I have this problem too, its always when doing a 3 point turn with full lock to lock steering but I couldnt do it at will and so was worried I'd get nowhere getting the dealer to repair it.  Having seen the instructions above I will practice and hopefully get it sorted by first service.  Not keen on losing it for 3 weeks whilst they get parts though - especially if replacement is a fiesta!!

Hi All,

My first post. I have a 5 TS2 purchased new last Aug and now has 10500 miles on the clock. I too have noticed a slight groaning noise coming from the steering rack at low parking speeds, but nothing as described in previous posts. I was wondering though....

at roughly what millage did the noise become apparent with other 5 users?

Damn good site, and thanks

The steering noise on my started fairly early on - 3-5000 miles.  I took it to a Mazda service garage and they "blew some air" over the steering parts!  It did not work funnily enough, but as with most people here it was not a noise that always happened.  Any way my car has now been with the dealer for more than FIVE weeks.  This is no April fool.  Tyres and steering still not fixed, but at least Mazda have given me a pretty decent rental car - must be costing them a fortune.

Interesting update:
Mazda UK technician has looked at my car.  Apparently the noise comes from  resonance of oil being pumped through a pipe in the power steering.  They have had this problem before and the solution is to replace the pipe with one with a wider bore.  However when they did this on mine last week it did not fix it.  Dealer says that this is the first case where this "fix" did not work.  Now someone from Mazda Europe is flying in to look at my car next week to take readings and to then try and find a solution in the future.

I should get my car back next Friday without the noise fixed.  What my dealer did say (and do not quote me on this) is that the noise is not a dangerous problem.  They will take the car back and fix it once Mazda have figured out what to do.

I would be interested to hear if anyone has had this "fix" done and whether it worked.

Hopefully the end of my story...

Last week I finally picked up my car after more than 9 weeks at the dealer.  Mazda UK tested it.  then two Japanese Mazda steering engineers flew to the UK to test it...crazy!  I think they were pretty excited as they spent two days testing the noise.  They then stripped out the steering rack and hydrolics and shipped them back to the factory in Japan for further testing.  I now have a whole new steering set-up and it works fine - no more groaning noise. Finally!

Must say I was a bit sad handing back the Ford Galaxy hire car...

A fascinating story indeed, and for your sake I hope that's the last chapter!

I have had this screeching sound too, only on about 5 or 6 occassions since the car was new last September. First (12500 mile) service was last week so I explained what had been occassionally happening and of course it just wouldn't do it, either for the guy doing the service or for me when I went to pick it up. Typical!!

I'd be interested to hear if there's any more noises after your complete steering re-build.

Cheers,
Dave.

You know what? I heard that noise in my Mazda, too. So I consulted a friend and told me that something was wrong with my car. But sadly, I haven't gone to a mechanic until now.

Boy I wish Mazda would send out a couple of suspension geometry specialists to sort out the tyre wear problems.......
