I have a 2000 Dodge Neon,  and one time for whatever reason I could not get it to go into Park and with the car in neutral it would go down the road just fine, shifting and all.  I disconnected the neg. battery cable for 5 minutes and the problem went away.  Before I did this I took the car to a Transmission Repair Shop and was told I had to bands melted together.  I got lucky and I've never had this problem again.  Not sure what caused the problem to begin with, you might give it a try, you never know. I know I saved myself some money and I was really skeptical with what the mechanic had told me.

Try checking the 15 Amp METER fuse in the underdash fuse box. Is supplies power to both the meters and shift interlock system.
