Hello all,

I am new to the Mazda world when it comes to working on them. My wife has a 2001 tribute. It is throwing a code po 455 and po 457. Possible a vac leak. If anyone has any help or other info on this problem let me know. Thinks. It also is hard to start in the AM. It will start and then die. Thanks to all.

Both codes indicating a large evaporative emission system leak. Try this first. Fold up the left rear seat cushion so you can see the carpet. There is a cutout section that flaps up and under that is the fuel pump access cover. Remove this cover and look for a black rubber hose that is approx 3/4 -1 inch in diameter. One end is connected to the tank and other is open to the air. This is the fuel vapor vent hose. Fold theopen end of hose over so it is pinched off and use a hose clamp or zip tie to hold in place. Sounds hokey but this was an official Mazda repair for those codes if that was where leakage occured. Will need to then clear codes or disconnect battery for a few minutes to clear and see how it works.

Were you able to get that hose from the fuel tank crimped off?

Just on an off chance, check to be sure your fuel filler cap is not loose. Maybe even take off, inspect the cap seal and reinstall. You will of course need to clear the code afterwards and drive as normal to see if code(s) will reset. Are both codes being reset or just the 455. Reason I am asking is that the P0457 typically is only set on the first evap leak self test after a refueling and almost always is an indication that the cap was left loose.

I had a comment to throw in, was the gas cap replaced with an aftermarket locking cap? I have fixed many trucks that had this code and reinstalled a factory non-locking cap.

The cap is stock and has never been replaced. I am going to try to change the cap and see what happens. Thanks to all that has helped.
