I don`t have a crunching from gear box but have you noticed any noises coming from steering when reversing

The main theme in this thread is tyres wearing on the INSIDE edge - maybe you have a new problem. Have a good look at the inside edges of your tyres, with your fingers crossed when you do. Regarding the DPF warning light, this was only mentioned to me when I was taking delivery of the car, but it did imply that the car wasn't suitable for only driving around town. It's not a problem for me, I zoom zoom around the motorways and I've never seen the light come on. Might I suggest you start a new thread to see if anyone else is having the DPF light problem? Dave.

Now I am sure John and Nicole at Mazda read this forum (or their colleagues). It would be great to get an official reply from them here on these issues. My message to John (who I called "Famous John" today on the phone having read so much about him in other postings): John (& Nicole) Please be straight with all of us loyal Mazda5 customers and please treat us consistently. For my part so far so good - but only becuase you have supplied me with a decent hire car (now for the last 4 and half weeks whilst you figure out how to fix my noisy steering - plus dodgy tyres). I also believe that you should do a product recall (on the tyres issue) as they are dangerous. A lot of us Mazda5 owners have young families that we drive around day in day out. As it is the inside edges of the tyres that go it is not obvious to us drivers. How long until there is a blowout at speed - and then what...? It's potentially a great car...

Well said Joe, but I hope no one is holding their breath! It really does beggar belief that a company the ize of Mazda or indeed the entire Ford Motor Company would be willing to risk their entire reputaion on the strength of an issue over uneven and premature tyre wear.As is rightly pointed out, it really only is a matter of time before someone has a blow out ans someone is injured. if I hadn't noticed this issue in this forum and others, i could easily have presumed that the tyres were fine until my first service which is still 2400 miles away. As the front tyres on my car are completely u/s, I do most of my mileage on motorways and am not known for my sedate driving style, I shudder to think of the possible consequences! Back on topic, called MMUK and spoke to a young lady called Inte ( I think that's what she said). She logged my issue and then stated that someone, either from MMUK or my local dealer would get back to me in the next 7-10 days. I left my mobile no as I am out and about on business all the time. Dealer called this pm- my home number, so I guess I'll call them tomorrow and post the result tomorrow night. She did state that she thought at 10k, the wear rate was a little excessive! Really? She didn't disagree when I stated that this is almost certainly a geometry issue. The only time I've seen wear like this is on cars with lowered suspencion that have been set up wrong, ie, the springs shortened and the rest of the suspension left untouched. Doesn't the Sport have a lower rideheight than the standard model?

Just spoken to Inte at MMUK who didnt need any help in understanding the tyre wear problem. She was quite aware that there had been many complaints about it and that Mazda were looking into the problem. She did say that there was no standard Madza solution to the problem. Some folk were getting new tyres, others a percentage towards replacements. She fully understood the safety issue of driving with dodgy tyres and kids in the back. Anyway lodged an official complaint, got a ref number and now waiting for standard letter and a call from my dealer to let me know what next. Will keep you posted. Hi folks, Latest udate, having spoken to the service manager at the dealer is that I have to take the car in this pm to be checked. He reckons that Mazda will only pay for a proportion of the tyres, which seems to be in line with what most people have experienced thus far. He did say though that there is now a Mazda Technical bulletin out with regard to this issue. He stated that this was very recent and he wasn't sure if the fix that it contained had been tried out on many vehicles. Next installment later!

STOP PRESS! I'm just back from the dealer. The service manager had in his hot little hand a Mazda TSB which he was kind enough leave in my eyeshot! It came to the dealers via email today and details a fix for the REAR tyre wear issue, ie, excessive wear on the inner sode of both rear tyres. The fix involves resetting the rear toe in by 2mm and replacing the tyres, with the usual cost to the owner and the % of the tyre left from new being covered by Mazda, but based on the new tread depth at new as below, with a new variant of the OEM Dunlop SP sport which has a different compound and now starts out with 8.3 mm of tread- standard high performance low profiles tend to have 7mm at new. This doesn't solve any of my problems- my fronts are both worn on inner and outer edges- he suspects a tracking issue, but expects them to be replaced asa "courtesy, and my rears have about 2.5mm left on the inside edge and as such aren't bad enough to be replaced yet (his suspision, no info from Mazda yet, but given their usual tack...). It is important to note though that the fix is available up to and including 25000 miles- this is stated clearly in the TSB. I hope this helps some of you out there to get these issues sorted once and for all with the minimum of further hassle! I'll post again when I know more about my own situation Cheers for now

Ooh, just for a minute you had be quite excited there Iain, until I read REAR tyres. Doh ! I have spoken to Jon Smith at Mazda UK again, and he has arranged for the Bolton dealer to take a set of tread depth readings later this week, I think that it is finally recognised that there is a genuine problem with front tyre wear too. Iain, as I said further up the thread, my dealer was positive that the front tyre wear was down to tracking, but the fancy machine proved them wrong. I'll be interested to hear how your tracking checks out. More soon...... Dave.

Well I haven't visited the forum since mine (2.0 TD 143bhp Sport) was almost brand new (August 06) and had a scare on reading this thread. I detected my tyres were a little heavy on wear early on but I pumped them up to mid way through the range (38psi on rear) and felt the ride/handling was much better. I have checked them occasionally but usually the fronts. I was worried enough to go out with a torch and have a look. My rears are nothing like as bad as some of the pics on here but I can definately see signs of inner wear on the rears; more pronounced on the near side. I have just under 6k miles on but the wear doesnt look bad enough that I would win any battle with a dealer. I will keep a close eye on it but my advice is to pump them up to 38psi. I do have the awful noise on steering occasionally when doing a lock to lock turn which I will be taking up with them at the service..
