I recieve the letter from Mazda a few weeks ago and this was my first indication of a problem.  The letter asked that if the car had not been checked recently to bring it into a dealer to check for tyre wear.  The implication of the letter was due to tyre pressure and it reminded that the tyre pressures should be checked regularly.  It also said that if uneven wear was found then Mazda would make a contribution to the replacements.

My car had only 25% wear on the rears but were down to the limit on the insides.  The dealer agreed that they needed changing and claimed they knew nothing about the letter or contribution.  A few days passed and the next time I went to the garage they had a multi page tech document which I was told covered the issue, described VIN ranges,  tyre manufacturer ranges and revised geometry settings if the car fell into the VIN/tyre ranges.   They also want to change all 4 tyres as they came from the same batch even though the fronts seem to have even wear.  When I discussed the high cost of the replacement tyres with customer services, they were keen to make it clear this was not a recall and there was no safety problems !!

Car gone in yesterday for tyre wear check, courtesy car given (mazda 6 which i had to insure for 32 quid for the day)

When i went to pick up my 5 they had a file in a clear a4 bag with a floppy disk in it, they told me it contained photos of the amount of wear that had taken place and will be sent to Mazda uk.

Wait and see now.

Update from me guys, and GREAT NEWS.
The heap of rubbish loosely termed a car that the Mazda5 is, is no more.
Traded in for a shocking £10k, a depreciation of nearly 50% in 18 months.
I can honestly say that this is the worst car I have ever owned (and bearing in mind I used to change my cars every 3 months, that is a lot).
I finally got sicking of lying customer services and uncaring incompetant dealers.
At the point of trade-in, and around 10 returns to the dealers the car still hasd the following problems:
screeching lock to lock
front tyre wear
noisy sliding doors
sticking reverse gear shift
steering vibration under breaking
pinking noise under acceleration
But none of these I need worry about anymore. Needless to say I will never buy a Mazda again, I will never go near a Mazda showroom again and I will tell everyone I come across to do the same.
Well done Mazda, you carry on spending your millions on advertising, but you need to start to understand that 1 dissatisfied customer is far has a far more damaging effect.
Anyway, onwards and upwards, at least the new Nissan Pathfinder doesn't have a great deal to beat, I just pity the next owner of my 5, especially when the warrant expires!
Good luck guys, it is a pity our collective didn't really achieve much. Keep up the fight!

Hello again all,

So I've come back to the site after a long gap because... yes! The front tyre wear is lethal, and yes it's a diesel sport. Can anyone tell me of a sympathetic dealer in Thames Valley to fix this?

Unfortunately someone (who will remain nameless) crunched one of the front wheels at around 6k miles and we paid our own way to fix both fronts. Now the new fronts (well, the old backs) are showing dangerous tyre wear at 12k miles. Costco are quoting £250 to swap both, which isn't bad - but I'd like Mazda to take some of the blame.

Incidently, when the car had it's first service, Basingstoke Mazda refused to acknowledge the reverse swing noise on the steering column

Hi, would I be right in assuming that the tyres that you moved to the front are Dunlops? My Dunlops were wrecked after 12K miles. However the replacement Bridgestones that have now done 10K are looking good, so I'm slowly beginning to believe the theory that the Dunlop tyres may have contributed to the wear problem. When the car went in for the 4-wheel alignment checks, no adjustments were made, so the only thing that's changed in my case is the brand of tyre.

My Bridgestones were £127 each I think, so no cheaper than Costco's Michelins. With about 11,000 miles on the clock Mazda agreed to contribute 41% of the cost of my Bridgestones. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't contribute to yours too. However finding a good dealership is a struggle.

Regarding the steering screech, I think they have some device that switches the screech off when it is in the dealership. Mine will do it virtually every time in Sainsbury's carpark, but won't make a peep at the Mazda garage!

Let us know how you get on.

Dave.

I have to admit to not reading the entire thread/description of your problem, but... could it be tyre squeal on certain surfaces that you're hearing?
And, stay away from Dunlop tyres.  They are a division of Goodyear Tire.  After three cars, three sets, and now my MIL's car w/Goodyear's too, I have sworn off GY products for life.  They're nothing but overpriced, over-hyped junk, imo.

Hi guys,
I had to be persistent, but never had to resort to any kind of agressive threat making with my dealer.
I think they realised that if they wanted to keep my custom, they would need to be helpful.
And helpful they have been.
I have just looked at my tyres and after over 4000 miles there is no obvious signs of uneven wear.
They seem to have sorted my car at least!

2 weeks in with the Pathfinder and things are great, more comfortable, quieter, slightly less mpg (about 38), huge spec, the 5 is now just a bad memory. Also checked out a discovery 3 but it couldn't complete with the Nissan on value. I bought a top spec Aventura, ex Nissan managers car with 10k on the clock and got it for £10k less than list from a main dealer - a great deal.
