Hi.

I have a 2004 Mazda MPV GT, with power sliding doors.  The key has a chip and the remote can operate the power locks and the power sliding doors.

Well, my wife thinks she lost hers (key and remote).  When I called Mazda dealers in Toronto, I was told a new remote costs $142.13+tax and a new key is $36.51+tax.   There is also a cost to re-program the new and my current key and remote together, for a cost of between $45 to $98 depending on the dealer.  It's supposed to take no more than 1 hr.

So it's going to cost at least $255 to get a new set of key and remote.  That's a lot of money.

Is there any other cheaper options, or am I at the mercy of Mazda?

Keep an eye on ebay for a keyless transmitter. Link at bottom is for one 04 MPV with power sliding doors for only $15. Take note that there is a mid year production change for the keyless. Remote you need will depend if your van was built before or after 08/01/04 so make sure the FCC ID and CANADA numbers on the back of remotes match. Might also check the onlinemazdaparts.com website. Prices there are much less than dealer prices. Programming your own remote is very easy to do so that might help with some of the cost. With new chip key you are more than likely at the mercy of dealer. Factory diagnostic computer and security access thru Mazda needed to program a key.
If you are sure your key was lost and there might be an issue with someone getting it and knowing it belongs to your van they will be able to enter and start your vehicle with that key unless dealer performs a 'Key code erase"

Thanks.

I was able to buy cheaper used remotes from ebay.  Also ordered transponder keys that will be cut using a key code.  But because I only have one good key, I have to take the new keys to a Mazda dealer for programming, it's supposed to be only a few minutes work.

If I have 2 good keys then I can program new keys myself (and save the trip and cost at the dealer).  So I did order more than 1 new key this time.

If anyone needs to order more transporder keys, be sure to order enough so you have at least 3.   That way you can program new keys yourself as long as you have 2 good keys.
