During some repairs/diagnostics on the 2.0 LX ... i had a fuel pressure gauge hooked up and noticed i didn't get any fuel pressure during key on/ Eng. off.
Once it was cranking... went right to 38psi. I went hounding for the Fuel Pump relay and couldn't find it. Any idea where that thing is? Also is this normal? I can't hear the pump whirring or anything... the check valve is working ok cause it holds pressure for 1/2 hour at least and it starts perfectly. Also... once i find the relay, is there a check to do to make it come on by jumping leads or something?

I have a 1989 mazda 626, thanks to this forum I finally found the place to jumper the fuel pump. On mine it is a small yellow connector with two wires, connected to nothing. Mine just hangs down against the driver side strut tower. Hope this helps.

Not all Mazda's cycle the fuel pump when key is initially turned on Ranchpig. If the fuel pressure jumped right to to 38psi when cranking then that in itself is telling you that the fuel pump relay is operating normally.

What have you figured out on your 89 theguy. I see you have several posts regarding stalling and not immediatly restarting. If the fuel filter was that clogged up it could have caused some fuel pump damage as the pump was having to work overtime trying to push fuel thru the clogged filter.  
Looks like you are also in the area of the Air Flow Sensor. Are you aware that there is a switch inside the air flow sensor that closes as soon as the air flow door opens slightly. This switch provides the ground path for the fuel pump relay coil. If switch does not close then pump relay is not energized and no fuel pump operation. To see if there is a possible fault in that switch causing your problems then just leave the Yellow connector jumpered all the time and see if the driveability problems go away.

Could somebody please explain this in a little more detail? This could help others of us with our situations, as well.

I've got lots of "connectors.. connected to nothing" under there (that I usually just don't mess with). One of them is bright yellow near the driver side strut tower as described! Do I understand that you run a patch from one terminal to the other (on the same connector)?

..or one of these to ground?

And this will do what; bypass the fuel pump relay and cause the fuel pump to run full time?
(with the ignition at ON, I assume)
