cold weather "halting"

Hi, Hope you can help another new 5 owner. Each morning when I first drive off (and each evening when I'm heading home), if it is "cold" outside (40F; 4C), the car seems to "halt" for a second as the car shifts from 2nd to 3rd (around 2200 RPM). This lurching sensation is very noticeable..but not easily repeated. The problem only appears 1 time on each trip...during the initial shift from 2nd to 3rd. The car has only 3,000 miles on it. Auto transmission. Car is heading in to the dealer on Friday...but wondered if anyone has experienced a similar issue. Thanks, Merrill

My wife's Toyota Camry does something similar. We live up North where it is VERY cold. Her car stays in a lower gear and the RPM's stay high, until the engine warms up. It may be a built in feature to warm the engine more quickly.

My Mazda5 is also slow to shift from 2nd to 3rd the first time on cold mornings. I think this may be the nature of the beast. I'm not planning to take mine in about this because it works so well otherwise, and I don't want to take the chance that the dealer might mess it up. Mine is a 2006 with 2400 miles on it.

I have 2007 GTS, and have the exact same problem, took it to the dealer but until now they can not duplicate the peoblem, hence they can not fix something they did not experience. On the repair order it say (C/S it means customer states), a statment does not have to be true and 99.9 % of the times when it comes to car service, it ends up to be something in your head but not in the car....??? If you know of a solution please let me know.

Next time you take the car to the dealership ask if there is an ECU flash upgrade. My co-worker was having the same problem and apparently was fixed flashing the ECU with a new version of software.

Merrill My M5 does the exact same thing. I joined the forum to see if any one else had this problem. Did you take it in for service? If so, did they do anything about it? Is it better now? I am going to call my dealership about the ECU Flash software?? upgrade that was recommended. I hope this will solve this very annoying and safety problem. Thanks for the recommendation. Please let me know how you made out.

Mine does this as well but it hasn't always been that cold outside. It is usually after a minute or two of driving from starting it though. I was in the middle of an intersection making a left turn when this happened and it could have been dangerous! It seems like it halts, then shifts from 2nd to 4th. I've got an appointment with the dealer this week but I'm sure they'll look at me like I'm just a dumb blonde who can't drive. Oy vay.

Took our M5 to service for ECU Flash. Ours has the most up-to-date software, so they couldn't do anything for us. If anyone else gets this problem solved, or learns of a service bulletin, please respond and let me know. It doesn't happen all the time. In fact, if we let it warm up a little longer, it hasn't been as often...and it's been cold! -2 F!

Hi I noticed the same recently. I'll have to call it in and see what they say. It's true that the service group needs to replicate the problem before they can attempt any repairs...with the temp being the stimulus...as the other blog stated it's hard to prove and prompt a repair. It may come down to everyone calling it in to get them to investigate it.
