Sounds like the coolant seals are shot. If they are, time for a rebuild.
No coolant burns white and if the seals were shot they would go direcly from the waterjacket into the combustion chamber, or exhaust system and there would be white smoke everywhere.

But he did say that it was pushing out the overflow bottle. Sign of bad seals, bad thermostat, or a blockage somewhere. Just to narrow it down.

How fast does the cooling system develop pressure or upper radiator hose gets very hard? Should take several minutes for the coolant to get hot enough to expand and create pressure. If it building up very quickly then would def suspect leakage between combustion chamber and cooling system. Leave the radiator cap off and start up engine. If coolant gushes out of the open cap then is a good indicator.

Easy enough to see if the coolant is making its way into the combustion chambers. Warm it up so there is pressure in the system or pressurize with a testing tool. Take out the Leading or lower two spark plugs and then roll the engine over backwards or counterclockwise. Any steam or water coming out of the plug holes would point to breach between coolant passage and combustion chamber. Most common problem I ever see for this happening is running straight water in the cooling system. Electrolysis develops with only using water and no coolant which actually eats a hole thru the aluminum rotor housing, most commonly near the leading spark plugs.
