Either a 2.3L I4 or a 3.0L V6. Depends on what you already had in there.

You did say just drop in.......

Stupid question, why are you replacing the engine? What in god's name did you do to ruin a two year old engine?

It is not a stupid question. If it is the 3.0l V6, they are notorious for having issues with the PCV valve which has resulted in a lot of engine failures at very low mileage. http://forum.mazda6club.com/index.php?showtopic=43344. Thanks.

Engines are a lot like people, some live a long time and some don't, although preventive care goes a long way in both cases.

Having said that, I have a Mazda 6s, V6, I chekc the oil all the time and I noticed somethign really interesting that I have not seen in any of my previosu cars, after 1500 miles or so the oil is still clear, this is not the first oil change for my car but I keep noticing that it takes more miles than ususal for the oil to start developing that black color.

To answer the engine replacement question, you have to match the engine with the trans, personally I would stick to the original car config because you would have to midfy too much, including the ECU to get it to work right.

I'd check to see if the new Duratec 3.5 would work. It's supposed to be the same size as the current Duratec 3.0. Regarding the PCV issue, I've read about it and have been keeping an eye on my oil as well. It's a shame that a $12.00 part can potentially be the cause of a major problem. Didn't Mazda re-design the valve in 2006?

Def. a shame that Mazda has had to replace engines due to a part that costs so little.

The one thing that makes the situation wors is that you have to convicne Mazda that it wasn't your fault that the engine ran out of oil otherwise you'll have to fit the bill for the repair. I really like Mazda, and enjoy my 6 but I really hope that they don't leave people hanging. The Ford Duratec V6is fine engine (albiet a thirsty one)and I hope that Mazda does acknowlege the PCVissue and comes up with a fix. They need to take care of their customers. The mid-sizedsedan market is very competitive and there are great alterntives available from a variety of other makers including their own parent company. BTW, has anyone heard of any similar issues with the Ford Fusion/Mercury Millan/Lincoln MKZ?

You do realize the 3.0L has been around forever...right?

Defects happen in any system to any manufacturer.

I've got the exact same 3.0L duratec 24V in my 2000 Taurus with 106,000+ miles on it and it runs like new.

There is no question about the engine's design (as I stated before, it's a fine engine). It just seems that eitherthe design and/or the materialsthat Mazda chose for the PCV valve is prone to fail more than other cars in its class. I understand that the valve design was changed in 2006 and hopefuly that should take care of any unusual problems.
