I was suppose to leave on a 3hr trip. I have had this car for a week and it did not come on during that time frame. I have fueled it for the first time Wednesday. But what could be wrong as to why the engine light coming on? Is it safe to drive that long of a time frame and then 3hrs the next day getting home. Help please because I am very nervous about this. Today is Saturday so I am not able to go somewhere to have it checked.

Does this mean it's a brand new car? Year? Mileage? Is it driving weird?
people drive around with check engine lights on all the time. As long as it doesn't do anything weird you may be alright although a 3 hour tour could be too long (it was for Gilligan!).
If you attempt to do it, do not press on the gas pedal very far (sudden bursts would not be good). Be Gentle. If it's a lean code or rich code you should be fine. Inspect your intake accordian tube for cracks. If you have cracks their, duct tape works wonders.
GOOD LUCK.

its a 2004 Mazda 6, 5 speed. It had 86,000 miles when I purchased it a wk ago. Est on mileage now maybe 86,500. It is not making any questionable noises, feels or smells.

Like I said, the most common code is too lean. Check intake hoses and listen for vaccuum hose leaks. Use duct tape. If you can't find anything, it may have just past the acceptable threshold. Without the exact code it is tough to make a decision. With no weird noises or driveability issues I would go for it. Keep an eye on your temp gauge and take it easy.

Once the engine for my Mazda 6 came on and when I took it to Mazda it turns out it was nothing! I paid £50 for it to be put the diagnostics machine for what? lol
You must be on the borderline and it re-adjusted this time when you shut car off and back on.
Carry on. Sweet!
