Headlight Module Problem

Headlight Module Problem
Hey,
I have a 2008 Mazda 6. Yesterday I turned my headlights on and they flashed for a second and then both went out. High beams are working normally. I brought it to my neighborhood mechanic who said the fuses and bulbs are good and that it was probably a problem with the module which would need to be fixed by Mazda because he does not have the tools to diagnose it. Can anyone explain what the module means/does? Is this expensive to fix and does it absolutely need to be fixed by the dealer? Thanks

It sounds like it just needs 2 HL bulbs to me. If they got bright and went out then you suffered a voltage surge which is not uncommon and can burn out both bulbs at once. While there is a module for the auto on/off lights it is rare to have one go out like that. No special tools are required to diagnose the module. A wiring diagram and a test light is all that is needed. I would replace both bulbs, when you buy the bulbs ask for the commercial account bulbs that they keep in the back, maybe 6 bucks apiece vs 60 bucks for off the shelf bulbs.
