got the six year, 75k mile warranty. Six years is playing it safe incase you get a lemon and need fixations a few years down the road. you never know what will go wrong.

Extended Warranty is "always" a good option!

In some cases alittle expensive ,however you will get your money's worth if you choose to keep the vehicle.

Thanks to all. Did all of you purchase the extended warranty from the same dealer that you purchased the vehicle from? The reason I ask is that I had an experience (not Mazda) once where the dealer wanted something like $1,700 for the warranty and I got it from another dealer for $770.

Shop around for the extended warranty. Your dealer may sell you this at what you may consider a bargain for $1500 but they only pay $500 for it in the first place. Markup on extended warranty is out of this world. Why do you think they try to sell you on it so hard??

Does anyone know of a dealer that discounts extended warranties? And sells via the net, fax or phone?

I love that inside info on the extended warranty, above. At standard price, I never buy extended warranties. As my husband says when it comes to all after-sale products, "just say no." BUT, if I could buy it at closer to the dealer's price ... it might be worth it. With us, it would be a serious discounted sale, or no sale (so far I have yet to find an extended warranty that covers anything I've ever had to actually repair). We'll see in a few months when we finally go in to buy if our dealer will discount.

You seem to know your stuff with warranties. I have a baby and a pretty high car payment so I am thinking that I should buy one. I have done a little bit of research and I was wondering if you or anyone else has heard of www.mazdaextendedwarranties.com? If I buy one I will most likely go with them. They were cheaper than the dealer and the term is longer. The dealer wanted $1750.00 for a 3/36.Isn't that rediculous?
If anyone else has a Protege 5could you please let me know if you have had any repairs?Mine is a 2003.

Less than 15% of the ppl that buy extended warranties actually get the opportunity to use them. (Data by C.U.)And that may be a bigargument in the first place. If you're pinching pennies as you indicate, don't waste your hard earned money on one.
If you choose to get one anyway, read it THOROUGHLY, before signing and DON'T let ANYBODY pressure you. If they are putting high pressure on you to buy it, they know they will make more on it than you will get out of it.
Extended warranties often cover very little and require you to prove that this and that happened in order to accommodate the warranties strict wording. They are insurance companies. And what do we know about insurance companies?? They like to collect LOTS more money than they have to pay out and will go to extremes to avoiddoing it. They have well trained corporate lawyers on their side. You don't. If you remember anything from this advice, remember that.
