2016 Mazda 3 Sunroof Exploding
Hi there,
I was driving my mazda on the weekend and my sunroof exploded. I wasn't driving behind anyone and it was on the freeway. It exploded outwards which indicates nothing hit it. Just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone before and how they handled it? It is clearly a defect in the sunroof and should be covered under warranty since I have only had the vehicle for eight months

2015 Mazda 3 (18000 miles) sunroof exploded on 3/17/2018. On the freeway some cars around. 59degF outside, 68degF inside, sunny day, smooth road. Just heard a *very loud* explosion then tremendous wind noise. Had sunroof headliner closed/sunroof closed. I opened sunroof headliner partially and some glass came falling in and I could see most of the sunroof glass just gone. Stopped and inspected and noticed very small amount of glass ended up on the sunroof headliner leading me to believe the glass exploded outwards. What remained were tiny glass bits. There wasn't any obvious flying debris, wasn't following a gravel truck (there weren't any) and was about 100 ft or more behind the closest car ahead. Pretty scary experience. Just glad the cars around me were not close.

Over the years I've heard sporadic reports of spontaneous exploding moon-roof glass and rear windows, from pretty much every vehicle maker on the roads these days. Typically (but certainly not always) the rear windows blow out on really hot days where a freak rain shower was encountered or when driving through a car wash. The moon-roof units don't seem to follow any pattern.

Shipo, thanks for the comment. Yeah, nothing to suggest unusual thermal stress to the glass. Nice choice on the Mazda3. Mine is the Grand Touring 5-Door 6-Speed...the smaller engine though...wanted the slightly better gas mileage.

Yeah, my wife wanted leather for her butt and, given she was coming out of a GTI, she wanted the extra power of the 2.5.
