Exclamation I'm new to the group

Hey there! We got a '02 Protege 5 about 6 mo. ago & a few things are needing assistance. The engine warning light came on shortly after leaving the car lot. It's the Catalytic Converter that needs replacing. Our area doesn't require one, so we've chosen to spend the $ on other things. How do I get the light to go away though. We're told that we'd need to drive 500 mi. for it to go off. Disconnecting the battery seems to reset it. So - if there's anyone out there that can offer some insight ~ that'd be great!
Thanks!

It will keep kicking the check engine light on until you replace the converter.

Thanks Hixx! Our next problem was with the instrument lights that needed replacing. I found a video for removing the panel. Took out the larger lights, (#194) that light up the speedometer & tach. The warning light bulbs are next. I did NOT disconnect the battery terminal the 1st time. After trial an error, we still haven't found the correct bulbs. We've tried #74 & they're too big. The ones we need are 1/2 mm W by just over 1.5 mm. L. Any suggestions as to what bulbs we need? These are the warning light bulbs for things like brake, oil, seatbelt, check engine etc.

Try this link:

Mazda Protege Workshop Manuals

Click on 09-22 and check out page 13. It shows the warning bulbs and how to remove them. Sadly it doesn't indicate the bulb size/type though. : (
