Default CEL code

I went and hooked up the tester to Igor (99 protege) and it comes back P0402 something about exhaust gas recirculation flow wxcessive detected.

So what do I do now I have cleaned the EGR and replaced a bad thermostat like 6 months ago. The light was on then and that took care of that issue.

My wife drove the car once and the light came back on. I noticed that it seems to be missfireing but it has done that for the past 3 months prior to the light comming on.

Any ideas?

Trouble codes are not all that accurate. I would clean the EGR ports in the manifold and I would make sure the nipple for the EGR boost sensor (it in reality is a manifold absolute pressure sensor) is open. It can get clogged form deposits. Replacing all vacuum lines is cheap and eliminates a lot of potential trouble codes.

Good luck!

Talking CEL off

So I went to Lowe's to get some top soil and I guess the six hundred pounds that I put in the car must have knocked some gunk off the catalytic converter and the light went off. So I guess I know what the problem is the next time it happens thanks for the help any how.
