2003 Protege ES - Electric Door Lock Actuator
I'm having a problem with the front passenger electric door lock. I've been told that it may be a problem with the actuator. But just to be sure I'll describe what happens:
1. Using the keyless lock, only 3 doors lock/unlock; the front passenger door does not.
2. Using the key to lock/unlock from driver side, same thing.
3. However, using the key to lock/unlock from the passenger side, ALL 4 DOORS lock/unlock.
Do these symptoms identify exactly what's wrong? Or, if it could be a couple different problems with the door lock mechanism, what test must I perform once the door panel is removed? Do I remove only the top interior door panel, or the bottom one too? Assuming that the actuator is bad, is replacement of the actuator a simple, straightforward job? Does the passenger side take the same parts as the driver side? Do I have to buy the part from Mazda?
I'd like to try to fix this myself if it's not too difficult. Mazda dealership quoted about $300, another shop $209. I read a post about this topic on this website from a long time ago, but I just had a few more questions. Thanks for your help!

So far so good. I've got the door panel off and just waiting for the new actuator to arrive. I'm a little unsure about how to proceed though. Do I disconnect the entire locking mechanism at the door jam? and then pull it all out, detach the lock mechanism from the actuator, then replace it? Or can I replace the actuator without pulling everything out: i'm not too sure about this option because it's pretty tight quarters in there. Thanks!
