1996 Protege LX Not running right
Ok so I will try and make this as detailed as possible.
I have a 96 LX that broke down a couple month ago my brother was driving and he claims that it just died on the freeway and we couldn't figure out why it broke down so I started messing around with it checking things off, it had spark, had fuel, and as far as I could see the timing was correct. I checked the timing as far as I could I couldn't find the timing indicator (I don't think it has one) next to the crank pully so I just took the side covers off and made sure the points were all aligned with TDC. Everything looked fine. I finally got the car running (not sure wth I even did) but now that it is running it idles fine but as soon as you put it under load it hesitates and struggles to get going. I've been told it is timing but I used a Chilton book and made sure everything was lined up and it is lined up. I'm at a loss. I'm no mechanic, I can work on cars but diagnosing problems is really not my strong point. If anyone can point me in the right direction of things to check if you think you know the problem any help would be great.

No cel codes? Engine light?
I would try to re-set the ECU by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery (and clean it as well as body ground). Follow this by depressing brake pedal a few times. Wait 10-15 minutes before re-hooking it up then letting it idle for 5-10 minutes. You may also try cleaning the MAF sensor while battery is disconnected. These are simple things to try first, as well as a fuel system cleaner.

Yeah that was also the problem no check engine light. I've disconnected the battery a couple times, while working on it. I've cleaned the MAF sensor, might just need to replace it. Someone told me it could be the EGR valve, I'm not sure how to check if its working though. And I used the fuel cleaner as soon as I got it running just to make sure.
