Default Way high rpm's on startup b2200 1989

Hi all,

I have dealt with this problem before but cannot remember exactly how. Sometimes on first starting my 1989 b2200 something in the acceleration linkage system seems to get hung up and the engine will race up to some way too high rpm's. It happened to me today on startup but it also happened to my wife and (allegedly) stayed that way on her drive home. I don't know if she tried punching the accelerator pedal to calm it down but I would guess not. In any case I have always been able to get a normal idle when this happens, which is quite rarely, by just punching the pedal. So I am thinking that there is something in this linkage, probably at the carb, that is getting hung up occasionally. Especially since I can punch the pedal and take care of it.

I have removed the filter casing and looked and felt very closely at the linkage and cannot see where this is happening. I do have a/c and the linkage for that is working fine. For example the engine revs up just a little bit when the compressor turns on or when I turn on the a/c.

Any thoughts on usual suspects for this problem?

Thanks very much,
Jim Lee
