mph off
Here is a odd issue. Up until here lately the speedometer seemed about ok. In the last week or so we have had colder than normal weather. The other day I noticed a dinging in the dash area that seemed to be the speedometer cable. After it warmed up it went away. Today it did the dinging noise but it as a new issue now. The speed of it seems way off. It was 5 degrees this morning. I noticed that the speedo would say for example 60 when I was probably doing 40-45 mph. I had it at probably 55 and it said 80. At about 20 it would say 30. It did seem to be not as off as much after a while. and the mileage indicator did seem to be right,it had that I had drove about 40 miles to work. If that amount is off it would actually show less than I actually drove. As far as the tach it seemed to be right on the money. I also checked the transmission fluid and it was ok. So I think the issue is with the actual speedometer hand. it does tend to be jerky or bouncy. So could the hand be going out and not effecting the miles driven and the tach. Could it just be due to the extreme cold weather and maybe resolve itself? Thanks in advance.

The issue is most likely inside the speedometer itself.
There is a small amount of grease in the mechanism that dries up over time.
This, coupled with it thickening in the cold, can cause the gauge to display faster than actual speed.

thanks for the reply. The last time I drove it the speedo did seem closer to normal. So I will keep an eye on it. The only dealings I have had with speedos off has been they ran slow to the gear on the end of the cable.
