Mazda B2600i No Spark at Coil
Was driving my 1989 B2600i 4x4 truck and it suddenly died. I was just like you turned off the key. Has not started since. Checked for coil spark and nothing. There is power to the coil from ignition. The coil seems to test out fine. Can anyone help? My next thought was ECU, could this be the problem?
Thanks

RE: Mazda B2600i No Spark at Coil
Had a problem w/my '90 2600i a few years ago. By the serial # it was made in '89. It was shutting off w/o any reason or so it seemed. When the engine was cold it ran fine, but after heating up it would shut off anywhere at anytime. Then it wouldn't restart for a while...or it would fire right back up like nothing happened. It got to the point where it was dangerous. On the interstate, in the middle of an intersection...anywhere. Replaced the gas tank, fuel pump, fuel filter, distributor(spark plugs, wires, rotor, etc)and coil. Finally, after spending 900.00 chasing this problem I had the ECU unit checked and it was bad. Turnsout theECU in the 89-91 2600i were made by Mitsubishi(as were the motors) and there is a capacitor in the circuitboard that was prone to leak and as a result would short it out. Could only get a rebuilt one froma guy in FL. Located it through Autozone. It was 350.00, butIhaven't even had a hint of a problem since replacing it. Spent almost 1300.00 when all was said and done. Also, there is an electrical component inside the distributor that goes bad and shorts out when it heats up. So, my problem was twofold. The symptoms weredifferent from what you describe, but I'd be willing to guess it's one of those two things or both given the year of your truck. Hope this is helpful.

I had the same problem with my 89 b2600I it turned out to be a chip inside the distributor.
if you decide to try that your better off just buying the whole distributor its only about 50 bucks more than the chip

Farmerjudd, After replacing the distributor tonight my truck fired right up. I found the same issue as you with the cost of the ignitor being almost as much as the entire distributor. With the new distributor you get new cap, rotor, etc. so it was a no brainer.
Thanks for the help!
