Default Diagnostic Connector Type Question

Dear all,

having found the location for the diagnostics on a 2003 Mazda B-Series B2500 2.5 litre diesel European model, I now have a question about the diagnostic port.

My aim is to purchase a DIY reader for the jeep. my understanding is that all new models are OBD2 compliant. From what I have seen (car readers on ebay) they are a 16 pin connector.

However the mazda seems to have 2 connectors!

See the links below to show there seems to be 2 separate connections:
http://www.auto-diagnostic-codes.com...CE_Photos.html

http://z.about.com/d/autorepair/1/0/T/U/42129986.gif

Question:

is it 1 connection but in 2 parts and hence I need a special device that connects to them both but then feeds into a obd2 connection?
for example:
http://cgi.ebay.ie/MAZDA-25-PINS-OBD...QQcmdZViewItem

I came across a couple of readers on ebay that I hope I can use:
GS400 Pro OBD 2 Scanner/Diagnostic Trouble Code Reader
http://cgi.ebay.ie/GS400-Pro-OBD-2-S...QQcmdZViewItem

PCM Data Code Reader Scanner 900 Diagnostic Car Van
http://cgi.ebay.ie/PCM-Data-Code-Rea...QQcmdZViewItem

has anyone got any advice on how I can bridge the actual jeep connection port to the devices on ebay or suggest another tool that I can use.

regards,
Will.

Default RE: Diagnostic Connector Type Question

Will,

I think Your Mazda must be fully OBD-II compatible: look for standard 16-pin OBD-II under the dash, that should do the job. Europechanged to OBD-II in 2001, at least my country (Finland) did so --> there must be std connector in cabin from 2001 onwards. Many models had itwell before.

I have Mazda 626 -98, it ismust beOBD-II (past -96)but it has only that17+8 pin 'Diagnostic' connector (the one Your both links are showing) in engine compartment : the upper part (17 pins) has only8 pins connected, this is where the OBD-II must come out.
Lower part (8 pins) is fully connected and this part is for'extras' (connecting a tach, fuel pump test, etc..) There can be something related to airbags, too
NOTICE: This is howI THIK it is!

There are several web pages telling how to read codes by connecting a LED tester to the diagnostic connector (=no scanner needed).
http://www.auto-diagnostic-codes.com...a-Engines.html

Most of the guides seem to handle thepre-96 connector (=OBD1) Itlooks like the later model, but has more pins connected. 'Ground the TEN-pin' guides refer to this OBD1
That link above claims that also the later model Mazdas will blink codes if some pin is grounded.
I haven't taken the risk (yet) to put ground jumpers in my connector...

Regards
Timo

Thanks Timo for your speedy reply.

I think you are quite right and I am indeed OBD2 compliant given my jeep is a 2003 model.

However in the engine are I see a box that has "diagnostics" written on it. You have the same 25 pin connector.

I searched under the dash on both passenger and driver sides. the one in the engine must be the OBD2 connector.

I have seen via my internet searching that other cars like the Mercedes or BMW have not got the standard 16 pin OBD2 connector. for example:
http://images.google.ie/imgres?imgur...%3Den%26sa%3DN

I have come across a 25 pin to obd2 connector for a Mazda on ebay as shown in a link in previous post (I think the title of the connector is wrong suggesting its an obd to obd2 converter!). I am not sure if it suits our needs yet as the advert does not show the part that plugs into the mazda.
looking at the image it looks as if the part that connects to the 17 pins is quite round and not rectangular. I have emailed the supplier to confirm if it will fit our models.
if it does I shall get back to you.

any other advice or info is greatly appreciated.

kind regards,
Will.

OK Will, I believe You:an OBD2 vehicle but no OBD connector.... welcome to the club!
(actually EU changed to OBD2 2001 for petrol and 2003 for diesel)

'the one in the engine must be the OBD2 connector' I agree.
I have 626 Factory Workshop Manual, it introduces the 'Genuine-Mazda-Diagnostic-Scanner' (=handheld device) that can read OBD2 codes + everything else from the car. In the pictures, thatscanner is connected to the gray 'diagnostic' connector in the engine.

Your ebay link looks very interresting,it looksthat adapter mechanically fits our connector.
The page had adapter pinmap andit seems to fit too:
Mazda's pin4= BAT+ and pin5=GND, those go to 16 and 4&5in OBD2 --> correct!
The bus is in OBD2 pins 2 and 10 ---those connect to 11 and 17 in Mazda. I wouldn't be surprised to find SAE J1850 PWM communication in Mazda pins 11&17 (Ford and Mazda aretypically using that protocol --->ElmScan should work)

I'm interreted to hear the ebay reply.

Default RE: Diagnostic Connector Type Question

if the connector has more then 16 pins then the plug is obd2 compliant and the reader should plug right into it. the reason they have more then the 16 plug is for mazda spacific computers, ie the ones they would use in the dealership[ that are specially made to acces more detailed information compared to the standerd connector. this is what iv learned in collegemind you.

Hi there,

the standard 16 pin obd-2 diagnostic reader port will not plug into the Mazda obd-2 port. Mazda has a 25 pin port in 2 sections, one is a 17 pin and the other is a 8 pin section.
if you look at the diagrams below you will see that the standard obd-2 port will not connect to any part of the 25 pin port :-(
http://www.ozmazda.com/board/uploads...1180435785.jpg
http://z.about.com/d/autorepair/1/0/T/U/42129986.gif

Do you think that there is a second diagnostic port somewhere for non mazda mechanics? I have searched under the dash, behind the ash tray etc on the 2003 Mazda B2500 2.5 litre diesel.
I wonder are mazda just been awkward with not providing at standard connector!

Would you think based on your experience that the following device would allow me to plug into a standard obd-2 scanner/reader? i presume the pins are matched correctly.
http://cgi.ebay.ie/MAZDA-25-PINS-OBD...QQcmdZViewItem

Any ideas?
regards,
Will.

Default Guys. Help! Trying to find my B2500's camshaft sensor.

Hello gentlemen,

I have had a time with this forum today. I want to ask this: "where is the camshaft position sensor in a 2000 Mazda b2500?" and don't even see where I can type in the question for the community to see.

I've searched here and on Google for an hour at least looking for an answer to this simple question, and nothing. The closest I got was when I found a diagram of what was supposedly a 2000 Mazda B2500 engine that had an arrow pointing to "Camshaft position sensor." I don't know what 2000 Mazda B2500 that guy has, though, because the sensor sure doesn't seem to be on the front, right side of the engine, toward the battery, in mine.

Any help or links to the right forum answer would be greatly, GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Nick

By the way, "Send Trackbacks"? Maybe I need to visit that FAQ page, but I don't know what those are. It's great being a rookie sometimes!
