Sounds like a timing issue to me.

#1 Piston at TDC, Both intake/exhaust fully closed, & distributor pointing to #1 cylinder spark plug wire? Are your wires going to the correct cylinders in the correct order?

What you are describing sounds like the spark is occurring when the intake valve is open (causing the backfire through the intake.)

Not sure....do you have a service manual you are working from? A Chiltons or haynes manual should give enough info.

So let me get this straight....you replaced/installed everything above without a manual.

How do you have any idea if anything is torqued properly? In the correct sequence? Cylinder head bolts installation torque/sequenceis especially critical in order to get a proper seal.

Did you mark the distributor, crank and camshaft location when you pulled it apart? When you put everything back together, did you hand crank the motor to make sure there wasn't anything binding/interfering with engine rotation?

You need to go get a repair manual and do a little research about what you are working on. Do something wrong and you'll just waste money (improper timing can cause the piston to hit the valves in the head, destroying both pistons and valves, then you're just rebuilding all over again.) Without a manual you are in completely over your head and your engine won't last long if it's just slapped together.

I'm not trying to be harsh, just truthful
