We just experienced this with our 2002 MPV. 107K miles. Actually happened to the fellow who rotated our tires. Switch worked fine when I left it with him. Very helpful thread. I think we'll opt for disable, but if stuff like this continues to happen (we've experienced power window and automatic door lock circuit failures), it's time to trade. Electrical problems are the pits.

I had the same problem, it is a mechanical issue. There is a microswitch that detects the shift is in P. For some reason the pin in the shift mechanism misses the microswitch and it does not disconnect the solenoid to release the key. I took it appart and bended a bit the microswitch flap so it will not miss the pin. Never had the problem again. Sorry I saw the posting only now. I am a new member, was looking for some other stuff and saw this posting.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have a 2000 Mazda MPV and could not get my shifter to go into Park and unable to remove the key. I found this thread and between you and "BabyHuey" I was able to get to the Microswitch (correctly named)
It was a pain to get to but once I had it slid out I could see how it worked. I had a bit of a time getting it back in. I used a mirror to see better. Once I finally seated it, I was amazed that it worked. Thanks for your words of wisdom. p.s. my wife was very happy as well!

Hi i was having the same problem and i even called out a locksmith and paid 260 bucks just to find out when i got back in my car and drove around for a bit and then parked to eat, went to shut off car and bammm key was stuck again, called locksmith back out and he tried and said sry someone else will be out 2morrow to put in a new ignition for ya but it is going to cost u another 300 bucks then says sry but i was trying to save u money. I was sooo pissed and stumped i figured i would check the web to see if there was anyone else having this problem, and this post came up. I would like to thank all of you you said pull the hazard fuse cause i just did that about 2 mins ago and the key came right out. Now if there is pic's of the micro switch and what to do to it I would really be thankful.
