2016 CX-9 Hitch & Harness
I just installed a class III hitch with 2" receiver by Draw-Tite. ($130.00)
A muffler shop installed the hitch for $30.00. Took them 20 minutes.
The dealership only carried the lower class and smaller receiver.
I did use the OEM trailer wiring harness kit.(No cost usually $66).
I did the harness install myself, took less than an hour, and comes with very good instructions.
You have to remove some panels and you just plug it into the factory harness.

Hi Mark,
Thank you for the Pics. I have been looking for a Class III hitch for my '16 CX9 Sig. How does this hitch look from the back? I do not like too much hitch showing from the back. Can you show a picture from the back? The OEM Class II ($300+) looks like it barely shows.
Have you also looked into the roof racks and roof carrier boxes? Any recommendations?
Thank again,
Orlando

This hitch looks like the OEM except for this is the larger 2" receiver.
I was given the factory harness for free from my dealership.(the least they could do)
The harness comes with complete instructions to install it.
The harnes plugs directly into the factory harness plug that is in every CX9. (The factory plug is behind the rear 12volt accessorie plug)
You have to remove the rear interior panels at and around the spare tire, and the far rear passenger panels.
I was going to have a stero shop install the harness but they were backed up, and I was leaving town in a few days for a week long baseball tournament 650 miles from home.
The trip was cramped with 5 of us which included my wife, 2 15 year old boys, and 12 year old boy and 3 sets of baseball gear.
As far as extra storage I used a tailgate box that mounts to the hitch. A roof box would have been nice.

I did the exact same install on my '16 CX9 Signature. The Draw Tite was $115 at etrailer and I used the Tekonsha wiring harness for which also plugs into the same trailer wiring harness. It's basically the same thing for $30 instead of $67. It's part 118278 2016 Mazda CX-9 T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector.

The Cequent 76020 hitch receiver is sold under the Draw-Tite, Reese, maybe Hidden Hitch, maybe U-Haul labels. Same company, same product. Search for the best price. A mounting bracket for the electrical connector is good to add to the receiver when installing, $5 or $6.
