Shouldn't the average mpg display change under varying driving styles?
To reset the average MPG, press the center of the info button on the steering wheel until it clears. You can reset your average speed the same way, but you have to scroll through the info section until the average speed shows up, then clear it the same way as you did the average MPG.

Default Getting as expected mileage

I have had my 2016 CX5 since the end of March and am about to flip 12000 miles. The average MPG to the first oil change at 6000 miles was averaging about 22-23 mpg. After the oil change, I've been averaging about 28-30 combined city/highway.

The key is that you have to reset the info button or your average MPG per tank isn't going to read properly. Read the manual on how to do it.

Resetting the average MPG function at every refill does not explain the mileage bump you experienced after the first oil change. However, that seems to be a common experience with SkyActiv G engines. My 2013 two litre did the same thing and took me by surprise. I use Mazda super-moly oil exclusively (maybe you do too?) and maybe that had something to do with it. Others (on other forums) have reported a similar bump.

We have 2014 CX-5 Sport manual transmission with 2.0 engine for just over two weeks. We bought it used with 27k miles as certified pre-owned. Average MPG for last 250 miles is 33.5 with about 70/30 highway/city. My wife is a primary driver and historically I get better MPG than her :-( All three cars in our household are manuals. With 2013 civic I'm getting 38 MPG about 70 % of which is driving in Austin

I just traded in a 2014 (bought in the spring of 2013) cx5 touring FWD. drove it 88k since I bought it brand new and my average for the 3 years was 31.6 mpg. I drove city and freeway and didn't baby it speed wise. High was above 35 low was around 27. I trade it on a 2016.5 AWD touring and the first couple of tanks have me very depressed. 28.9 is highest so far. uuugh

The AWD gets lower gas mileage than the FWD, which is clearly stated in the specs for the Mazda CX-5. 28.9 is pretty good for the AWD.

Speed limits are mostly 55 in New England. If you drive 75 (which we do on other trips) you can not realistically expect to get the published MPG rates. The standard government tests that all car makers use don't test at 75mph.

In my experience my mileage exceeds the published rates, whn my husband drives it pretty much mimics them.

Really? I live in New Hampshire and routinely drive to the NYC metro area, and depending upon my route, it is 65 all the way to the Merritt Parkway, if I head north from where I live the speed limit is 70.

You're judging your new CX-5's mileage by the first two tank fills?! Did you get 31.6 mpg on the first two tanks with your 2014? I didn't think so. Most people (including myself) experience a mileage surge after 4-5k miles when the engine loosens up and the first oil change (particularly if you use Mazda Super-moly oil). And, as noted above, don't expect the same mpg out of an AWD as you got on FWD.

I have 14k on my 2015 touring and got a whopping 20.5 MPG in city / highway driving. My 2007 Mazda6 got better mileage and I don't drive this car anywhere as hard as the 6. I drove from Orlando to Tarpon Springs (all highway) and got 26 MPG. The 6 got 30 MPG on that trip. I was under the impression that these vehicles were factory tuned for mileage, but I don't see it.

I ran the tank dry the other day got 20.8 combined MPG and somehow put 15 gallons of gas into the 14.5 gallon tank. FYI that 300 miles on a tank of gas... POOR...
